The actual rumours that are currently coming out of China are that NVIDIA could try and inject the market with a fairly heavy dose of the GTX 1650 graphics card, all in an attempt to placate the ever-growing anger within PC Gamer who are unable to buy the brand’s latest Ampere-powered GPUs. If the rumours are true, it goes without saying that the move is peculiar and, given the current market demand for beefier GPUs, a little off-key, if not tone-deaf. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, along with a cryptocurrency boom, a chip shortage, and high demand, has led to a severe GPU shortage within the PC market. Even worse, NVIDIA isn’t the only company that is being affected; its rival, AMD, has also seen the production of its Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs strangled by the chip shortage. It also doesn’t help that chip production facilities like Foxconn are projecting that the shortage will continue well into the second half of 2022.
Naturally and to no one’s surprise, the GPU shortage has inevitably forced PC shops and distributors to substantially raise the prices of the current GeForce RTX 30 series graphics card. If that wasn’t bad enough, these entities won’t sell any of the GPUs ala carte, requiring customers to purchase what is essentially a whole new system. Just to own that one component.
