As with most countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan is still limiting travel by flight – thus leaving most of its citizens grounded. This experience aims to satisfy the country’s travel-starved tourists, while also taking the opportunity to show off the recently completed renovations done to the airport. Prior to the flight restrictions, Songshan hosts domestic flights as well as those to Tokyo, Seoul and several cities in China.
The “travellers” are offered a fake itinerary to check in, directed to go through passport control, and even board an Airbus A330 where flight attendants offer in-flight services throughout the entire experience. Just like the real deal, but without actually travelling anywhere.
While the whole thing sounds bizarre, the service provided by Songshan airport is actually well received by Taiwanese citizens. Around 7,000 people have applied to take part in the lucky draw, where a total 60 winners are chosen at random. The airport promises that more fake flight experiences will take place in the coming weeks. (Source / Images: Reuters)
